Let’s dig into Tableau containers.

When you understand how containers work, your dashboards will look and function better.

Tableau Containers: What are they?

With containers, you can organize and manage multiple worksheets, dashboards, and other objects in one view.

In addition to structuring dashboards, they allow you to organize them into manageable areas.

Why are containers important?

A container organizes information, optimizes space, and creates responsive dashboards. It’s up to you whether you want to go horizontal, vertical, floaty, or tiled.

Horizontal vs. Vertical Containers

Horizontal Containers:

What are they?

They align objects horizontally across the dashboard.

Use Cases

Side-by-side charts and horizontal navigation panes.

Pros and Cons

- Pros: Easy to compare charts; efficient use of wide screen.

- Cons: May require horizontal scrolling, not as efficient with vertical space.

Vertical containers:

What are they?

They align objects vertically down the dashboard.

Use Cases

Ideal for stacking charts, filters, controls, and vertical navigation panes.

Pros and Cons

- Pros: Efficient use of vertical space, more mobile-friendly.

- Cons: May require vertical scrolling, less efficient use of wide screen space.

Floating vs. Tiled:

Floating Containers

What are they?

There’s no limit to where you can put floating containers on the dashboard.

Pros and Cons

- Pros: Layering, independent sizing, greater flexibility.

- Cons: Difficult to manage, less responsive to screen sizes.

Tiled Containers

What are they?

Tiled containers fit into the dashboard grid.

Pros and Cons

- Pros: Structured layout, adjusts to fit the screen, easier to manage.

- Cons: Limited customization, no layering.
